Trustee's Letter: March 2024

Dear Friends,

I hope this message finds you well as we embrace the opportunities of the new year. With March already upon us, I'm excited to remind you all the next month - April marks World Landscape Architecture Month (WLAM). It's a fantastic occasion to celebrate our profession and its impact, especially in this landmark year of ASLA's 125th anniversary. For more information on how you can participate and contribute, please visit https://www.asla.org/wlam2024.aspx. Let's make the most of this opportunity to highlight the significance of Landscape Architecture and spread the word far and wide!

As always, there's plenty happening both at MDASLA and within the broader National ASLA community. Here are some updates and key events to mark in your calendars:

Save the Dates: The ASLA 2024 Conference on Landscape Architecture will be held from Sunday, October 6, through Wednesday, October 9, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Stay tuned for more details and promotional materials showcasing the new Sunday-Wednesday schedule.

125th Anniversary Celebrations: This year marks ASLA's 125th anniversary, a milestone we've been celebrating across various platforms, including the ASLA website and social media channels. CEO Carter-Conneen recently participated in 'Conversations with Olmsted: ASLA at 125,' shedding light on the future of our profession alongside esteemed panelists. It was an enlightening discussion moderated by John King, Urban Design Critic for the San Francisco Chronicle. All ASLA 125-related events and activities can be found on the newly established ASLA 125th anniversary celebration hub on www.asla.org

Biodiversity & Climate Action Webinar Series: The ASLA Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee is hosting a series of webinars designed to enhance our profession's understanding of biodiversity and climate action. These sessions, running through October, offer an excellent opportunity to expand your knowledge and earn CEUs vital for maintaining licensure.

ASLA Government Affairs: To help place students in positions to be policy changemakers, ASLA has created a new Student Policy Internships resource that highlights policy opportunities. From internships in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to governors’ offices, state legislatures, and more, this resource is filled with internships and resources cultivated by the ASLA Executive Committee. Read more in LAND, a great membership benefit and be in the knowhow.

Founders Club Campaign: Join us in honoring ASLA's 125th anniversary by supporting the Founders Club. Our goal is to reach 125 members in 2024, and your contribution can make a significant impact. Visit our website to sign up online and be part of this special initiative at https://www.asla.org/donate.aspx

I want to express my gratitude for your ongoing support and membership. Your involvement is integral to the success of our chapter, and we're committed to serving you to the best of our abilities. If you're interested in volunteering or contributing to our efforts, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at contact@marylandasla.org. We welcome everyone to join our team and contribute in their unique ways.

Thank you for the opportunity to continue serving as Trustee of MDASLA. I look forward to sharing more updates with you in the coming months.

Best Wishes,

Om Khurjekar, PLA, ASLA, LEED AP BD+C Trustee, MDASLA
