Apply to the Fall 2023 Scholarship and Fellowship

Deadline to Apply: December 22, 2023 at 5:00 pm

The Maryland Chapter offers the scholarship and fellowship opportunities in furtherance of its mission to promote the profession of landscape architecture statewide through advocacy, education, communication and fellowship.

Accordingly,  scholarship and fellowship recipients will be expected to (1) Create a synopsis / provide documentation and imagery of significant work accomplished as a result of having received a scholarship or fellowship for use in Maryland ASLA publications and display at the annual Maryland ASLA Chapter awards gala and such other venues as the Maryland Chapter Board may determine to be appropriate from time to time; (2) Attend the Maryland ASLA Chapter annual awards gala (at Maryland ASLA Chapter's expense); (3) Provide the Maryland ASLA Chapter with information about their subsequent graduation and employment for purposes of the chapter's evaluation of the scholarship and fellowship program. Additional expectations of fellowship recipients are (1) Presentation of the completed project to the Maryland Chapter Board at one of its monthly meetings and/or Chapter event; and (2) Documentation of expenditures in accordance with rules established by the Maryland Chapter Board and generally accepted accounting principles.

1. Scholarships:  Two scholarships of $1,000 each, one for a student at the University of Maryland and one for a student at Morgan State University, are available to defray the costs of attending an undergraduate or graduate program in landscape architecture, including tuition, fees, room, board, and other expenses calculated as legitimate costs of attendance under rules established by the U.S. Department of Education.

2. Fellowship:  One fellowship in the amount of $2,000 is available to support a special project that will provide a foundational opportunity for a student at either the University of Maryland or Morgan State University to grow as a future landscape architecture professional, such as to support costs associated with (1) presenting a paper at a conference, (2) participation in a design workshop or competition,  (3) a special  internship project, or (4) another "out-of-the-box," creative idea for independent work.

Selection Process & Awards

The Maryland Chapter Board will have sole responsibility for selecting scholarship and fellowship recipients.  Scholarship awards will be made directly to the educational institution or its affiliated foundation. Funds may be used for the Winter 2023, Spring 2024, Summer 2024 or Fall 2024 terms. Fellowship awards will be made directly to the student, contingent on the Maryland Chapter Board approving the budget for the project. The Board reserves the right to decide whether payment will be made in a lump sum or in increments.
