The Role

We are looking for a Landscape Architect / Environmental Designer with 5–10 years of experience to join our team. This role sits at the intersection of technical design, regulatory compliance, and environmental restoration. You will be responsible for managing complex projects ranging from roadside vegetation management to large-scale environmental permitting and restoration.


Key Responsibilities

Environmental Design & Permitting

• Permitting & Compliance: Prepare, coordinate, and ensure compliance for environmental

permits (wetland and waterways, erosion and sediment control, and stormwater).

• Federal/State Coordination: Prepare and process Joint Federal/State Permit Applications

(JPA), coordinating with regulators, stakeholders, and the public.

• Documentation: Prepare Avoidance, Minimization, and Mitigation Reports for JPAs.

• Contract Documents: Develop complete contract documents, including plans,

specifications, and estimates for project advertisements (including Design-Build and

MicroStation CADD workflows).

• Fieldwork & Monitoring: Perform environmental monitoring, inspections, and site

assessments; develop remediation and Phase I/II mitigation plans.


Vegetation & Natural Resources

• Restoration: Lead environmental restoration projects, including wetland mitigation, stream

restoration, and Critical Area mitigation.

• Roadside Management: Develop integrated roadside vegetation management plans and

manage maintenance projects along SHA roadsides.

• Forestry Compliance: Ensure compliance with Maryland Reforestation Law and Forest

Conservation Plans; perform NRI/FSD (Natural Resource Inventory/Forest Stand

Delineation).

• Specialized Assessments: Evaluate and protect specimen trees and conduct wildlife vehicle collision assessments


Program & Project Management

• Coordinate with consultants via phone, email, and meetings to ensure timely delivery of

high-quality products.

• Manage program areas including Planning, BMP design/implementation, Asset

Management, Compliance, and Reporting.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

• Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental

Science, Horticulture, Botany, Engineering, Planning, or a related field from an accredited

institution.

• Experience: 5–10 years of professional experience in landscape architecture or

environmental design.

• Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with NEPA, Federal aid agreements, and NPDES/MS4

Compliance Services.

• Regional Standards: Knowledge of Maryland wetland assessment methodology and

Maryland stream mitigation frameworks.

• Technical Skills: Proficiency in MicroStation CADD.

• Logistics: may require occasional overnight travel and part-time on-site staffing at SHA.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with federal grant administration.

• Proven track record in task management
